Abandoned sailboat removed from New Smyrna Beach
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - An abandoned sailboat that washed ashore in New Smyrna Beach has been removed, according to Volusia County officials.
The county coordinated with contractors to safely extract any hazardous materials from the vessel before destroying it and transporting the remains to a landfill.
Officials emphasized the urgency of the removal due to the boat's potential risks to public safety and the environment.
Concerns included the possibility of the anchor line snapping during a storm, which could have caused hazardous debris to spread.
