Gainesville Walmart standoff ends after 6 hours; person in custody, police say

A Walmart Supercenter and nearby businesses in Gainesville, Florida, were evacuated for hours on Saturday after someone barricaded themselves inside a trailer in the parking lot, and fired shots, according to the Gainesville Police Department.

The incident began around 8 a.m. and ended shortly after 2 p.m. The person was taken into custody shortly before 2 p.m. 

What we know:

A 5-hour standoff in the parking lot of a Walmart in Gainesville, near State Road 93 and State Road 24, has ended. The alleged person involved has been taken into police custody, Gainesville police said.

Several agencies responded to the Walmart Supercenter around 7:50 a.m. regarding a suspicious person who had reportedly fired shots and then barricaded themselves inside a trailer, police said.

Police said in a news release that the person had fired shots again from the trailer. No one was hurt in the shootings, police said.

Shortly before 2 p.m., police said the person had been taken into custody. No other details were immediately released.

FOX 35 crews captured video of negotiators working with the person involved. Both SWAT and Gainesville Police Department's negotiation teams were on site, alongside the Alachue County Sheriff's Office and other first responders.

Several roadways were closed in the area due to the ongoing situation.
