Mom of spectator killed in alleged Orlando street racing crash reacts after arrest made
ORLANDO, Fla. - Almost three years after Kevoy Curtis' death, allegedly caused by a street racing driver in Orlando, an arrest has finally been made.
Curtis' family has been awaiting this development since the tragic incident.
What they're saying:
FOX 35's Kelsie Cairns spoke to Curtis' mother, Audrey Bell Curtis. She declined an on-camera interview, but said the day her son went out to go watch the race is a day she will never forget.
She shared the following statement:
"My heart has been shattered every single day since I lost my child. The pain is something no words can truly capture. For two years, l've carried the weight of unanswered questions and the ache of knowing the person responsible was still free. Today's arrest brings a small sense of relief but no true comfort because nothing will ever bring my child back. I pray for justice, not out of anger, but to honor the beautiful soul my child was and the life that was stolen far too soon. To everyone who stood by us, who fought for this moment, thank you. May we now begin the journey toward healing, though the void in my heart will remain forever."
The backstory:
Curtis and nine other people showed up to watch a street race in Orlando when a crash occurred.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the incident happened on Cortland Street, near Adanson Street on April 20, 2022.

Curtis and another person were injured in the crash. He was in the hospital for two short days before he died.
The other person survived.
Who is Samuel Enrique Lugorodriguez?
Samuel Enrique Lugorodriguez, 22, was arrested by the Orange County Sheriff's Office in connection with Curtis' death. He was booked into the Orange County jail on January 22 and is currently held on a $100,000 bond.

Local perspective:
The deadly street-racing incident is the latest example of the problem impacting Orlando.
In November 2024, approximately 30 people set a fire, performed burnouts, and damaged vehicles, including one with a mother and baby inside during a street takeover, deputies said.
James Copenhaven, a former sheriff's detective, said the issue has been ongoing for a long time, particularly in the East Orange County area, which is known for street racing.
"Our streets have no place for the street racing, and just like this case, that racing event turned fatal," he said.
