DeSantis: Idalia to be 'powerful' hurricane

Gov. Ron DeSantis is urging Floridians to prepare now as Tropical Storm Idalia is forecast to become a major hurricane before making landfall in Florida this week.

Evacuations

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued starting 9 a.m. Tuesday and must be completed by 7 p.m. Tuesday for the following areas: 

  • All coastal communities including: Suwannee, Horshoe Beach, Jena and the immediate surrounding areas
  • Mobile homes an manufactured homes throughout the county
  • Recreational vehicles
  • Low lying areas in the county

School closures

Dixie District Schools said they will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday. 

Shelters

A general population shelter is now open at Dixie County High School (17924 SE HWY 19). A special needs shelter is now open at Bell Middle-High School (930 South Main Street).
