DeSantis: Idalia to be 'powerful' hurricane

Gov. Ron DeSantis is urging Floridians to prepare now as Tropical Storm Idalia is forecast to become a major hurricane before making landfall in Florida this week.

Evacuations

A voluntary evacuation order has been issued for all low-lying areas and residents of mobile homes. 

Shelters

These general population shelters will open Tuesday at 4 p.m.:

  • Trenton Elementary
  • Bell Elementary (pet friendly)

A special needs shelter will be open at Bell High School's Health Academy. 

School closures

The Gilchrist County School District said schools will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, including school events and extracurricular activities.
