Hurricane Milton moving off Florida's east coast, still producing damaging hurricane-force winds, heavy rain

As Hurricane Milton was moving off Florida's east coast, the Category 1 storm was still producing damaging hurricane-force winds and heavy rains.

According to the National Hurricane Center's 5 a.m. advisory, Milton was moving off Florida's east coast at 18 mph with maximum sustained winds at 85 mph.  The center of Milton was approximately 10 miles northeast of Cape Canaveral and had a minimum central pressure of 976 MB. 

Hurricane Milton made landfall south of Tampa Bay Wednesday night as a "dangerous" Category 3 storm near Siesta Key, Sarasota, Florida, at 8:31 p.m. had estimated winds of 120 mph at landfall – making it a major Cat. 3 storm.  Watch live coverage in the video player above.

All Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings have been discontinued for the west coast of Florida.  The Tropical Storm Warning for all of the Florida Keys and from the Palm Beach-Broward County Line southward has been discontinued.  The Hurricane Watch for Martin County and Lake Okeechobee has been discontinued. The Storm Surge Warning has been discontinued from Anclote River to the Middle of Longboat Key, including Tampa Bay.  The Storm Surge Warning has been discontinued from Bonita Beach to Flamingo.

  • Florida's east coast from the St. Lucie/Martin County Line northward to Ponte Vedra Beach

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

  • Florida's east coast south of the St. Lucie/Martin County Line to the Broward/Palm Beach County Line
  • North of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida to Edisto Beach, South Carolina

As of 5 a.m., Hurricane Milton was approximately 10 miles northeast of Cape Canaveral.

Big wind gusts will continue until sunrise across all of Central Florida, ranging from 60 mph in western portions of our viewing area to 100 mph along the east coast counties.

How much rain is expected from Hurricane Milton?

Hurricane Milton is expected to bring 3–6 inches of rain south of the storm's center, but north of the center up to 10 or more inches of rain is forecast. 

How strong will the wind be from Hurricane Milton?

The Orlando metro area will begin to experience stronger winds after midnight with gusts between 80-100 mph. The coastal counties will see stronger winds arrive after 2 a.m. and parts of Volusia and Flagler counties could experience gusts of 100 mph or greater.
