Tropical Storm Oscar set to track away from Florida

Tropical Storm Oscar update

Oscar was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm over the Caribbean, according to the National Hurricane Center.

ORLANDO, Fla. - On Monday evening, Tropical Storm Oscar was over Cuba’s eastern coast, bringing strong winds and rain. 

Oscar was moving toward the north-northwest near 7 mph and a turn toward the north-northeast was expected overnight, followed by a faster northeastward motion on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

We will be watching the Caribbean Sea in early November. It is time to start talking about the potential for one or several systems to form in the Caribbean between November 1 and 15.

Generally speaking, hurricanes in the Caribbean during November do not track toward the United States. Only three hurricanes have hit Florida during November since 1850. So, while it has happened before, it is statistically unlikely.

That said, ocean heat is very high, and wind shear looks to be very light. 

If you have travel plans to the Caribbean, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, or any of the islands, you should monitor the forecast closely in early November. While at this point, we will not rule out a threat to Florida that appears unlikely at this time, given the historical context of most hurricanes in the Caribbean in November. They do not come to Florida. 

The next name on the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season list is Patty.
