The school week is a little shorter for some students in Volusia County. When the bell rings at the end of the day on Thursday --- the weekend officially begins. Volusia County School Board members recently approved amending the charter for Chiles Academy to allow the school to operate on a 4-day school week.

A crane operator in Palm Bay was killed after his machinery hit live power lines prompting a fire. Neighbors watched in disbelief as the operator was working on new construction.

At least one firefighter was taken to the hospital Tuesday night while helping to fight a fire at The Center Arena Church in Orange County, Orange County Fire Rescue said. Glendalis Godreau Torres was arrested on Monday for aggravated manslaughter in the death of her five-year-old son. Court records state that the boy was found unresponsive and later declared dead at the hospital. A toxicology report found that the boy has fentanyl and cocaine in his system.

Five women were arrested after they allegedly intentionally clogged the toilet at a Central Florida wing joint, igniting a brawl with employees, according to the Longwood Police Department. Kenisha Charles, 18, Tyesha Charles, 19, Keiyanda Charles, 24, Jasmine Cline, 26, and Jahleigha Smith, 20, were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, battery, and criminal mischief.

Oviedo Police Comfort K9 Xander was presented with a check from the Aftermath K9 grant program on Monday. Xander, a comfort K9 at Lawton Chiles Middle School recently placed 2nd for the Aftermath K9 grant, awarded in June. Xander and his handler SRO Ashley Pierce were in a competition against K9s across the country to win this grant. The grant helps to maintain the comfort K9 program for the police department. Parents, students, and district officials seem to agree that serious punishment is needed after allegations -- and video -- of alleged hazing among the football team at Viera High School surfaced last week. But, there is disagreement about whether or not the entire football season should be canceled. Some feel that measure unfairly impacts the team, marching band, and cheerleaders who were not part of the hazing incident.

Parents of football players at Viera High School are expected to meet with district officials Monday night after allegations of hazing surfaced last week. Amid the investigation, the head football coach has been relieved of his duties and the football program has been suspended indefinitely. Some parents who have kids in the marching band are now concerned that their kids' activities will be impacted by those few students who allegedly participated in the hazing.
