Florida's home insurance crisis and climate
Insurance rates nationwide have jumped 9% this year. Computer models are predicting a steady increase in severe weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes and oppressive heat and that is pushing premiums higher everywhere as the industry factors in more catastrophic losses. The Florida legislature has passed bills to try to stabilize rates, focusing on subsidizing the private market and making it harder to sue private insurance companies. However, companies continue to pull out of the Sunshine State.
